American Athena
Oil on Canvas, 72" x 48"
I'm not entirely sure what possessed me to suddenly decide doing a massive oil painting. This piece took nearly a year from the first grid lines being measured out to the final glaze of paint. It was the most difficult work I've attempted so far and because of that, I learned so much from it. I am only too eager now to continue with large-scale paintings.
As for subject matter, the female nude is everywhere in art history but the women are typically depicted as submissive and soft. I've served with some of the physically and mentally strongest people I've ever known, and many of them were women. American Athena was created to challenge the established tradition of female depiction in art.
